This weekend I dusted off my old Polaroid 110B camera and ran some packs through it while hanging with a bunch of friends.
I noticed quick that I was pretty rusty with guessing proper exposures on the fly and holding

steady at a 1/30th of a second exposures. Here is a little sampling of what came from this weekend.

More images to come soon. I'm going to keep my 110B out and on standby from now on, I forgot how much fun it is to shoot these things!

I hope to keep changing my work space until I'm totally happy with it... Today I have new images on the wall, about 15 hard drives on the desk getting organized and backed up.. printer and scanner are working over time as well. Next month I'm sure my desk will have an overhaul and I'm hoping to get this thing off the ground even higher so I can have a stand up workspace. Feel more human when I'm standing and working.

THE SHOTS IN BETWEEN

Sometimes its hard to see time to create something you really want as a photographer. At least I have this problem recently when I'm doing a lot of work for clients with a specific look and feel to it I don't have much creative input at times. I always try to remind myself to find time in between wardrobe changes, or during a lunch break to shoot landscapes if on location or to grab a model or even an assistant to step in and shoot something that will keep my creative process flowing and allow a little break from shooting 30-40 dresses on white which sometimes is the case. I love the in between snaps that sometimes turns out to be keepers and inspire me to keep shooting and try new things. The first shot of the day and the last shot of the day are always my favorites where I spend most of my time. The initial shot gets the talent and I comfortable together and how we are going to work the rest of the day depends on this first shot. The last shot is the longest shot of the day where I take it to another level and step beyond the comfort zone of the clients or what we are trying to achieve and push for something different, new or just opposite of what we did all day. Usually that is when the magic happens. I'm trying to take that into every shoot and every shot in a day that I make. Try and find that happy medium of pushing it past what we are looking for and into something unexpected that makes everyone say "Wow!"
Now we are creating something. Its the in between shots that I live for in photography, the unexpected surprises.

Recent shot I did with a favorite local model named Allie @ Look Models
I had to black out a good portion of the pool to get the dark background look
which took sometime with a scuba tank and tons of black cloth, as well as lots of

UNDERWATER

Here are a couple of images from a recent underwater shoot. I used 5 profoto heads with different color gels, green, blue and orange which caused this strange color mixture in the images. The lights where pointing into the water from the surface with 7" reflectors on each of them. The overall quality of light looks very close to natural light but I enjoy the color tent that the added gels created.

On our 3 year anniversary I took my wife to where I was born and raised for her first visit. My first time back in 15 years! The place hasn't changed much and usually that's a bad thing but not here. I was glad it felt the same, the land where I was able to run, ride horses, shoot guns and get poison oak all before doing my homework or getting called in for dinner. I miss this place and all its amazing memories of child hood.

I have been listening to NPR and other news broadcasts about the BP oil spill and it keeps boiling my blood. I don't know what we can do or what we aren't doing yet that could help stop or slow this mess and clean up our oceans and beaches. Today I was talking to one of my best friends Mike Jones who is currently in New Orleans working on the feature film "Green Lantern". During a few days off of production he went down to see the coast and the mess that has already hit the coast. This is a photo he just emailed me from his iphone, a dead bird from the oil sludge. Mike said, "in Revelation, it says the water will turn to blood. That's what it looks like out here - like the Gulf is bleeding."

BACKYARD = RAIN MACHINE!

I have a photographer friend who built this rain machine that he found directions to online and loved it. So simple and easy to make, so I built one myself and gave it a go. The trick is to keep your talent happy with pumping warm water from you home faucet to the outside, I tried directly from outside faucet with my first test using this rain machine and the shoot ended in minutes! Warm water = happy talent. These images are from the shoot I did with the rain machine this week. First pic is during lighting test and shows the set up in my backyard.

HELI TEST FLIGHT DAY 1

I just received this sweet little EFLITE BLADE SR heli in the mail yesterday, today I went out to give it a maiden voyage in Golden Gate park with my buddy Josh Gruetzmacher. First flight about 5 feet up and layed it down into the grass.... ouch! .... ok, deep breath... prop it back up. Ready for second go, this time I give it a little more throttle to get up about 12 feet off the grown, it did a small circle around us as I quickly try to adjust and level her out, no use this thing loves gravity, and proceeds to do a spiral into the grass... smack! Blades busted, and gear teeth stripped out, GAME OVER. That was 2 minutes of fun, right? Now ordering replacement parts and a set of training wheels for a helicopter.....

Ok, so I'm a little bit of a junk yard scavenger. A few days ago I was wondering my neighborhood when I noticed a huge cardboard box, the kind you used to cut up and make into a fort when we were kids. A refrigerator box size... on the side was written "FREE" I love free things so a split second later I'm inside this box going to town pulling out old books with hard covers I kept putting aside magazines and national geo's from years ago.. and BAM I noticed a VOGUE magazine, pulled it up from the piles and trash, books and other lesser publications, its a 1979 VOGUE!! I kept digging and digging only to uncover these four magazines. Now I have a mini collection and keeping my eye out for any other strange looking boxes near that house where I stumbled upon these little gems. To some its trash, I think its treasure. :)

Not that I'm going out to get one, but its pretty fun to see where the industry is heading as they change with the demand for better, smaller cameras for all consumer levels. Then you can go the other route and get bigger and heavier and still have tons of demand for it such as the new EPIC camera from RED. If you don't know about RED yet, you should look into what they are dreaming of creating and have already put out some amazing cameras... (just to show off... added a picture of me wielding the RED one, its a heavy beast!)

Three Year Anniversary! 5/5/10

This post is a little late for our anniversary but thought I would add a photo from our weekend getaway to my aunt & uncles cabin up in Shaver Lake, California.
Living with my best friend for three years, we have had so many adventures in such a short amount of time. I'm so happy to be with my wife Christy and I love her more then I thought I was able to love. This image was a random idea while driving through Sequoia National Park on our way back home to San Francisco. I wanted to stop and shoot something with the trees and the light was going down soon...after awhile into the drive I thought how great and beautiful each tree was and so amazed at their age and height... "look at that one!" "look at that tree, its amazing!" Then it hit me I'm sounding like a tree hugger... and now we have our tree hugging portrait shot with my 5D MK II on a tripod and a remote shutter release so we can both be some hippie tree huggers, we love trees! Happy Anniversary to us.

7X7 Magazine

Here is a funky image that I did for San Francisco's local magazine 7x7.
This is Sara Kraft, a local SF performer who brings a little bit of everything to the table for her shows.
She mixes media like mix master mike. A number of video cameras record her while she is on stage and projectors display the images at different times on large canvases or silks suspended on the the stage while she interacts with other images, lights and even herself via the pre-recorded or live at the event recordings. I didn't do it any justice with my explanation but its very unique and intense.

Swing Dancing in Camarillo, CA

A good friend of mine Sarah Breck is a professional swing dancer, she travels the world swinging and bopp'n. I had the pleasure to shoot a few images of her dancing with her swing partner Dax at the Camarillo Airport.
The airport was full of amazing vintage aircraft flying around all day as we danced on the tarmac. Here is a sample of one late in the day shot. I have to get more images up soon once I finish editing more.

Went up to Lake Tahoe last week for a few days on the mountain. Had a fun time
at Northstar's park and then found left over powder at Squaw Valley. Did some shooting
of my friends and my buddy Seth did a little post of the images with his company

I just returned from shooting in LA this past Sunday, did the drive from SF - LA on the 101. Gotta love hwy 101, so many great locations along the way worth stopping for and taking the camera out. I'm back in SF now and working on edits and retouching images that are due tomorrow. Friday I'll be heading back south on hwy 101 to shoot a group of ballet dancers performing in Santa Barbara. The ballet company is called Morphoses / The Wheeldon Company. If your in Santa Barbara area get yourself some tickets you won't be let down.

SNOWBOARD MAGAZINE & NORWAY

A new issue of Snowboard Magazine has just hit the stands and with it are the images I took in Norway last winter during the event that Terje Haakonsen created, The Arctic Challenge. It was snowing most of the time I was there, during the event the sun came out maybe for 10-20 mins. It was great getting to ride and shoot along side the worlds best quarter pipe riders like Terje, Pat Moore, Antti Autti and Shayne Pospisil who won biggest air on the mega-quarter pipe. Oh also Snowboard Magazine has a new logo and this issues cover is in 3D go grab a copy of it off the news stands.

November of 2009 I had the opportunity to shoot a story for WIRED Magazine on the amazing island of Kauai . Here is an online link to the shots and story. Its pretty interesting what these guys on Kauai are doing to preserve the natural fauna, by killing the alien plants with paintball guns and choppers!

Teatro Zinzanni

Last night I was able to take Christy out to Teatro Zinzanni for dinner. I'm working on a potential job with Teatro Z to shoot new advertising images for them. Since I had to see what its all about to get a better idea of what they do we were comped tickets to the dinner/show. Its a must see if you your ever in SF great characters and fun times. We had some good laughs at most of the time at the expense of other dinner patrons that get pulled into the show from time to time during the entire evening which lasts about 3 hours. Back in November I did a shoot on the beautiful island of Kauai for WIRED magazine. It was a dream job that put me and my wife up in a helicopter for a few hours flying through canyons, over waterfalls, landing on the wettest spot on earth and hanging out over the ground shooting images of the vegetation and the people who help to protect its natural progress and prevent over growth of alien plants that have been brought onto the island. The story will be out in the Feb. issue of WIRED so go check it out.

New Wammy

I just posted about craigslist and again I have some news.. don't just look over at the free stuff all the time. Although free is amazing however sometimes you can find great deals on things just a little bit above the free zone. This is my new wammy jammy, paintball gun I picked up from Craigslist today, the guy lived in my neighborhood and didn't really want it anymore... So now it has a nice warm new home! Anyone out there wanna go shoot eachother?

Trampoline sessions & Craigslist...

So.... I have this problem. I can't stay off craigslist, I love it. I always search craigslist.com in the morning for about 20-30 mins before I start my daily grind of editing and retouching. The secret to craigslist is to find things that are FREE! Look on the section FOR SALE and click on FREE. People drop things on the curb, give away pianos, furniture, rocks, wood, bikes.. oh and trampolines. I found a post "trampoline for free" and I went and got it! Now its my pride and joy in my backyard sitting there looking at begging me to come and play. One day I did and since it is a 14' trampoline it takes up my entire backyard space. I opened my window and jumped out onto it and had memories of childhood and learning tricks on my snowboard flood into my head. I jumped I bounced... then I think I blew out my back! Now its been 5 days since my new friend in the backyard and I can't go play. I have been making new friends with my chiropractor downtown who tells me I need to stay away from the trampoline for awhile. Ok all that being said I haven't jumped on it since my back went out but I had a model come over that I know named Hilarie and we shot a bunch of images of her jumping and having fun on the trampoline.. Here are a couple images that I have been playing with since then and my back is feeling better and I think I may go jump out of my window again. :)

June 2009. Christy and I loaded up everything we own into a Uhaul truck and drove from NYC to San Francisco. After dropping Christy off in Columbus to visit with her family and get the first class treatment of flying to SF, I began the journey with good friend Phil Anema who joined me on the drive out west. This is a picture of Phil at his best during a quick pit stop in eastern Colorado. After 10 days of traveling and sightseeing we arrived to the bitter cold air of a typical San Fran summer... If only I had a penny for every time someone mentioned the quote from Mark Twain! The summer is gone and now we are cruising along in 2010 and enjoying the 62 degree temp. we have now in the middle of January. So this is a start for me on a mission to begin to blog and post for 2010 and see how I do with keeping it relevant, interesting and consistent. Wish me luck and any help or advice for better blogging formats, layouts, software would be greatly appreciated... CR
